Chicago is the third most populous city in the United States, home to 2,746,388 residents as of the 2020 Census across roughly 234 square miles on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. What makes it unusual for buyers is that it lives as a collection of neighborhoods rather than one market: the city is organized into 77 official community areas and well over a hundred named neighborhoods, and the gap between them in price, housing stock, and feel is enormous. A lakefront condo in Streeterville, a greystone two-flat in Logan Square, a worker cottage in Pilsen, and a bungalow on the Northwest Side are all Chicago, and they trade nothing alike. The constants are the lakefront and its roughly 26 miles of public parks, an unusually deep transit network (the CTA 'L' plus Metra commuter rail and two major airports), and a housing market that is, by big-coastal-city standards, still attainable. What it’s actually like to live here
Where you land in Chicago shapes daily life more than in almost any other big city. Along the lake, Streeterville, the Gold Coast, and Lincoln Park trade in high-rise and historic-mansion living with the parks, the lakefront trail, and downtown at the doorstep. Just inland, Lake View wraps around Wrigley Field, while Old Town and River North put nightlife, galleries, and restaurants within a short walk.
On the North and Northwest sides, Wicker Park, Logan Square, and Ukrainian Village have become the city's creative core: boulevards and greystones, independent shops, music venues, and some of the most talked-about restaurants in town, generally below lakefront prices. To the west, the West Loop has turned old meatpacking warehouses into loft condos and Restaurant Row. On the South Side, Hyde Park is anchored by the University of Chicago and the Museum of Science and Industry, and Pilsen, in the Lower West Side, is known nationally for its Mexican-American culture, murals, and arts scene.
The through-line is access. Most established neighborhoods are walkable, served by the 'L' or Metra, and close to the lakefront's parks and beaches. How Chicago got here
A bit of history.
Chicago grew from a small trading settlement at the mouth of the Chicago River into a city that incorporated in 1837, then exploded over the following decades as the rail and water hub of the American interior. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of the central city, but the rebuild that followed made Chicago a laboratory for modern architecture, including the first steel-frame skyscrapers, and the city hosted the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
Through the 20th century the Great Migration brought hundreds of thousands of Black Americans from the South to the city's South and West sides, reshaping its culture and giving rise to Chicago blues, gospel, and later house music, while successive waves of European, Mexican, and other immigrants built the distinct ethnic neighborhoods that still define the city. That layered history is why Chicago reads as dozens of different places: each community area carries its own architecture, institutions, and identity built up over a century and a half.
