The area, not just the school
East Garfield Park sits just west of the Loop, and its heart is the Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the largest conservatories in the country and a free, year-round draw for families across the city. The neighborhood is built around Garfield Park itself, so green space and open sky are part of everyday life in a way you do not always find this close to downtown. Getting around is easy: the CTA Green Line runs east and west along Lake Street with a stop right at the Conservatory, and the nearby Blue Line puts the rest of Chicago within quick reach.
The housing here leans toward classic Chicago character: greystones, brick two-flats, and vintage single-family homes on tree-lined side streets, many with the original detail buyers love to restore. It is honest to say parts of the area are still working through decades of disinvestment, but East Garfield Park is in a real period of revitalization. Community groups, the Conservatory, and new development are steadily bringing energy back, and for buyers who want space, transit access, and a foothold near the Loop at an approachable price, it rewards a close look.

About Manley Career Academy High School
Manley opened in 1928 as Hugh Manley Junior High School, dedicated that September and built to house up to 3,000 students. It became a senior high school in 1933 when Chicago abolished junior high schools. The U.S. Navy occupied the building from 1944 through the end of World War II, and in 1946 it reopened as a trade and vocational school later known as Cregier Vocational High School. The Chicago Board of Education re-designated Manley as a senior high school in 1973, and it operates today as Manley Career Academy High School in East Garfield Park.
Manley offers three career and technical education programs alongside a college-preparatory curriculum that includes Advanced Placement courses, supported by community partners such as OneGoal and GEAR UP that focus on college readiness and student leadership.
Manley competes in the Chicago Public League as the Wildcats and is an IHSA member. The boys basketball team is the school's headline program, winning the 1980 IHSA Class AA state championship with a 31-1 record and taking back-to-back Public League titles in 1979 and 1980. In 1999 Manley fielded the first African American public high school rowing team in the United States, later the subject of the documentary A Most Beautiful Thing.
