About Wendell Phillips Academy High School
Wendell Phillips opened on September 4, 1904, a Classical Revival building designed by architect William B. Mundie and named for the abolitionist Wendell Phillips. When it opened it served the South Side's mansion district, but the Great Migration soon transformed it, and by 1920 Phillips had become Chicago's first predominantly African American high school and the cultural anchor of Bronzeville. In the late 1920s, members of the school's championship basketball team were recruited to form the nucleus of what became the Harlem Globetrotters, first playing as the Savoy Big Five out of Bronzeville's Savoy Ballroom. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark on May 7, 2003.
Phillips is a High School Transformation and AVID school offering Advanced Placement courses in U.S. History, Biology, and English, plus honors courses across 15 subjects. Career programs are offered in fashion design, graphic communications, and drafting, and the school runs a Junior Air Force ROTC program and an on-site health clinic. Community and university partners include the University of Chicago, Illinois Institute of Technology, City Year Chicago, and the Field Museum.
Phillips competes in the Chicago Public League as the Wildcats. The boys basketball team won the IHSA Class AA state title in 1975, while the boys track and field program took multiple state first-place finishes across the 20th century. The football program reached back-to-back IHSA finals in the mid-2010s: in 2015 the Wildcats became the first Chicago Public League team ever to win a state football championship, then won again in 2017 in Class 5A.
