Living near Senn HS
Living around Senn means living in Edgewater, one of Chicago's most welcoming lakefront neighborhoods on the far North Side, about seven miles up from downtown. Lake Michigan sits right at the eastern edge, so Foster Beach, the Lakefront Trail, and a string of small lakefront parks are part of the everyday rhythm here. People walk the path in the morning, bike to the beach on a warm afternoon, and treat the lake like a backyard. It is the kind of place where the water is never more than a few blocks away.
The housing tells the story of Edgewater's history. You will find vintage walk-ups, classic Chicago courtyard buildings from the early 1900s, converted greystones, and grand old apartment hotels along the lake, mixed with single-family homes as you head inland toward Andersonville and Edgewater Glen. The Bryn Mawr Historic District, running along Bryn Mawr Avenue between Broadway and Sheridan, shows off some of that early glamour, with landmark apartment buildings that once drew names like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra.
Getting around is easy, which is a big part of the draw. The CTA Red Line runs right through the neighborhood with stops at Berwyn, Bryn Mawr, Thorndale, and Granville, so a downtown commute is straightforward. Just south and west, Andersonville offers one of the best small-business shopping and dining strips in the city. Add it all up and you get a neighborhood that feels settled and friendly, full of green space and good food, with the lake always close by.

The school
Senn High School opened its doors on February 3, 1913, and it has anchored the Edgewater neighborhood ever since. The school is named for Nicholas Senn, the noted surgeon and medical educator, and its original building was designed by Arthur F. Hussander, the chief architect for the Chicago Board of Education. Over the decades Senn grew into one of the North Side's signature schools, and today it is known for its International Baccalaureate program and its fine and performing arts magnet, Senn Arts. A wing of the building once housed the Rickover Naval Academy, which moved to its own campus starting in the 2019-2020 school year.
Senn offers a rigorous academic lineup built around the International Baccalaureate, which the school was granted in 1999. It runs as a wall-to-wall IB World School, with all 9th and 10th graders in the IB Middle Years Programme, plus the IB Career-related Programme, the IB Diploma Programme, and a selective IB Diploma Prep track. Senn also offers Advanced Placement classes, a program for English learners, and Career and Technical Education pathways. Alongside the academics sits Senn Arts, the school's audition-based fine and performing arts magnet established in 2011, with concentrations in music, theatre, visual arts, and dance.
Senn's Bulldogs compete in the Chicago Public League and are a member school of the Illinois High School Association. The athletic program has deep roots, going back to the early Public League, and built a long-running tradition across sports like track and field and tennis. Today the school fields a full slate of teams in the green and white.
