Living near Kenwood Academy
Living in Hyde Park and Kenwood means settling into one of Chicago's most intellectually rich and architecturally beautiful lakefront neighborhoods. The University of Chicago anchors daily life here, bringing world-class lectures, the Court Theatre, the Smart Museum of Art, bookstores, and a steady hum of students and faculty to the tree-lined streets. Just east sits the lakefront itself, with the Museum of Science and Industry, Promontory Point, and a continuous ribbon of parks and beaches where neighbors run, bike, and gather on summer evenings. The Midway Plaisance and Jackson Park, home to the future Obama Presidential Center, give the area wide green spaces that feel a world away from the downtown skyline you can still see across the water.
The housing stock is a big part of the draw. Kenwood is famous for its grand historic mansions and estate lots, while Hyde Park layers in vintage co-ops and condos, classic Chicago greystones, and well-kept apartment buildings, many with original detail and lake or park views. Buyers who love character and craftsmanship tend to fall hard for this corner of the city, and there is real range here, from stately single-family homes to approachable condos near the university.
Getting downtown is easy. The Metra Electric line runs straight up the lakefront into the Loop in roughly fifteen to twenty minutes, and several bus routes and Lake Shore Drive keep the rest of the city close. Dining and everyday life center on 53rd Street, Harper Court, and the blocks around the university. It is a neighborhood that rewards people who want culture, green space, and architecture without giving up an honest commute to the heart of Chicago.

The school
Chicago Public Schools began planning Kenwood, then called Kenwood High School, in November 1965, responding to South Side overcrowding in the final years of the baby boom. The proposal drew intense community debate before the Board of Education approved construction in November 1966. Building began in March 1968, and at 7.4 million dollars it was considered Chicago's most expensive high school at the time. The permanent building at 5015 S Blackstone opened in September 1969 with an enrollment of 700. In 1977 the Chicago Board of Education designated the school an academy and a school of distinction in recognition of its academic excellence and special programs.
Kenwood pairs a neighborhood high school with a competitive citywide magnet Academic Center that admits seventh graders by admissions test and lottery. The school carries the motto Our mission is COLLEGE and offers Advanced Placement coursework, with AP students able to access resources on the University of Chicago's Hyde Park campus. University of Chicago faculty and students work with Kenwood students through programs that pair juniors with professors as mentors, and qualifying seniors can take tuition-free University of Chicago courses. As of the 2019-2020 school year, Kenwood reported a 93 percent graduation rate.
Kenwood's teams, the Broncos, compete in the Chicago Public League and are members of the Illinois High School Association. The girls basketball program has become the school's signature team, winning its first Public League city title and, in March 2025, the program's first IHSA Class 4A state championship. The boys football team won its first Public League championship in the 2021-2022 season.
