Living near Harlan Community Academy

The area, not just the school

Harlan sits in Roseland on Chicago's Far South Side, a classic bungalow-belt neighborhood where wide side streets are lined with sturdy brick bungalows and vintage two-flats built for generations of Chicago families. The Metra Electric District line runs right through the area, giving commuters a straight, traffic-free ride into downtown's Millennium Station in roughly half an hour.

Neighboring Chatham to the north is one of the city's proudest homeowner communities, and buyers here are drawn by solid brick construction, deep lots, and prices that stretch a budget much further than the North Side. It is a part of Chicago with deep roots, real front porches, and a strong sense of place.

About Harlan Community Academy High School

Named for John Marshall Harlan, the Kentucky lawyer, politician, and U.S. Supreme Court associate justice, Harlan opened in September 1958 at 9652 S. Michigan Avenue with an enrollment of 1,400. The Chicago Board of Education had approved the roughly 3.2 million dollar building in June 1957, and it was built in 18 months to hold between 1,800 and 2,000 students. By April 1965 enrollment had swelled to 2,726. In August 1985 the school was designated a community academy, opening enrollment beyond its attendance boundary through the Option for Knowledge program.

Harlan added a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) academic program in the 2009-2010 school year and graduated its first STEM class in 2013. The school is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The Harlan Falcons compete in the Chicago Public League and the Illinois High School Association. The boys track and field team won the Illinois state championship in the 1966-67 season. Harlan also owns a deep Public League tradition, with city basketball titles in the 1960s and additional Public League crowns in track, cross country, and baseball.
