Living near Steinmetz
Belmont Cragin is one of Chicago's 77 community areas, tucked into the Northwest Side about 8 miles from the Loop. It grew up around the railroads and factories that once lined the area, and you can still read that history in the streets: block after block of solid brick bungalows, Cape Cods, and two-flats built to house the workers who came here through the early 1900s. The eastern edge holds Belmont Park, a residential pocket that has long been one of the most sought-after places to buy in the neighborhood. Today Belmont Cragin is a large, densely populated, and predominantly Hispanic community with a strong family character.
Daily life here revolves around a handful of well-used commercial corridors. Belmont Avenue's Belmont Central shopping district has been the retail spine since the 1920s, and the big-box shopping that replaced the old Brickyard Mall near Narragansett and Diversey keeps everyday errands close to home. For green space, Jacob A. Riis Park is the local landmark, a Chicago Park District park later shaped by noted landscape designer Jens Jensen.
Getting around is one of the neighborhood's quiet strengths. CTA bus service runs the main streets, including the long-standing Belmont Avenue line, and Metra's Milwaukee District West Line serves the area from the nearby Grand-Cicero station, giving commuters a straight shot downtown. For buyers, the appeal is straightforward: sturdy, affordable vintage housing, a real neighborhood feel, and solid transit into the rest of Chicago.

The school
Steinmetz College Prep opened in 1934 and is named for the German-American mathematician and electrical engineer Charles Proteus Steinmetz. The public four-year high school sits in the Belmont Cragin community area on Chicago's Northwest Side and is part of Chicago Public Schools. By 1995 it enrolled more than 2,200 students, then one of the largest high schools in Chicago, and that same year its United States Academic Decathlon team became the center of a well-known cheating scandal later dramatized in the 2000 television movie Cheaters. The school is today an International Baccalaureate Programme school and maintains an active JROTC program.
Steinmetz College Prep is an International Baccalaureate Programme school and operates an active Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program. It serves grades 9 through 12 as a neighborhood public high school within Chicago Public Schools.
Steinmetz competes in the Chicago Public League as a member of the Illinois High School Association, and its teams are nicknamed the Silver Streaks. The boys baseball team were Public League champions in 1975, and the boys cross country team were Public League champions in 1950 and 1992.
