Living near Fenger HS
Roseland is a deeply rooted community on Chicago's far south side, the kind of neighborhood where wide residential blocks are lined with classic 1920s brick bungalows, sturdy two-flats, and Chicago greystones that have sheltered generations of the same families. Life here revolves around the Michigan Avenue commercial corridor and the surrounding side streets, with local churches, corner shops, and long-standing family businesses giving the area a real sense of history. Fenger Academy's Collegiate Gothic building has been a landmark on South Wallace Street since the 1920s.
Getting around is one of Roseland's quiet advantages. The Metra Electric District line runs along the neighborhood's eastern edge, putting a one-seat ride into downtown within reach, and 111th Street is the main east-west artery for errands and connections. Drivers reach the rest of the region quickly via I-57 to the west and the Bishop Ford Freeway to the east, so both the Loop and the south suburbs are an easy trip.
What draws people to Roseland is the housing itself: solid, well-built masonry homes at price points that are increasingly rare anywhere near a major city. Buyers looking for a first home, a multi-generational two-flat, or a rehab project with good bones find a lot to like here, and the far south side's larger lots and mature trees give the streets a settled, established feel.

The school
Fenger Academy High School opened in 1893 as Curtis School and was renamed in 1915 by the Chicago Board of Education to honor Christian Fenger, the pioneering Danish-born surgeon who practiced in Chicago. The present Collegiate Gothic building on South Wallace Street was constructed between 1924 and 1926 and has anchored the Roseland community ever since. In more recent years, Fenger was featured prominently in the 2014 CNN documentary series Chicagoland.
Fenger competes in the Chicago Public League and is a member of the IHSA, with teams known as the Titans. The boys baseball program is the school's athletic signature, winning an Illinois state title in 1946 and taking multiple Public League championships across the decades, while Fenger football captured four Chicago Prep Bowl titles.
