Living near Orr
Orr Academy sits on the West Side of Chicago, in the blocks between the Humboldt Park and West Garfield Park neighborhoods. The area takes its name and its heart from Humboldt Park itself, a green expanse of more than 200 acres with a lagoon, a historic boat house, ball fields, and the city's only inland beach.
Humboldt Park is best known as the center of Puerto Rican culture in Chicago. Along Division Street, the Paseo Boricua corridor is marked at each end by two 59-foot steel Puerto Rican flags installed in 1995, gateways to one of the country's flagship Puerto Rican enclaves. The corridor is lined with restaurants, murals, cultural institutions, and the summer festivals that give the area its identity.
The housing stock is classic pre-war Chicago: greystones, brick two-flats and three-flats, walk-ups, and single-family homes, most built before 1940. For commuters, the CTA Blue Line runs along the neighborhood's northern edge, with stations at Division and California giving direct rides to the Loop and to O'Hare. Buyers are often drawn here by prices that stay more attainable than neighboring Wicker Park and West Town while keeping easy access to the park and downtown.

The school
Orr Academy High School traces its origins to 1918, when it opened as an elementary school in the building that is now the Brian Piccolo Specialty School. It began hosting high school students in the 1920s as a branch of Austin High School, later served as a branch of Marshall High School, and became an independent high school in 1963. The school moved into its current building, designed by the firm of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, in 1973, and is named for early labor leader Rezin Orr.
Orr competes in the Chicago Public League and is a member of the Illinois High School Association. The Spartans boys basketball program is the school's signature athletic success, winning three consecutive IHSA Class 2A state championships from 2017 through 2019 under head coach Louis Adams.
