Living near Hyde Park Academy
Living near Hyde Park Academy puts you in one of Chicago's most storied South Side pockets, where Woodlawn meets Hyde Park just south of the University of Chicago. The area blends classic greystones and vintage courtyard buildings with newer construction, and it draws people who want walkable, transit-rich city living close to the Metra Electric line and the lakefront.
With Jackson Park, the Obama Presidential Center rising to the east, and the university anchoring the neighborhood, this is a part of the city that keeps attracting long-term interest and steady demand. The school
Hyde Park Academy was established by the Chicago Board of Education as Hyde Park High School in 1863 and moved to its present campus at 6220 South Stony Island Avenue in July 1914. The school became a magnet career academy in 1973 and in 2012 adopted the International Baccalaureate program, taking its current name. On February 15, 2013, President Barack Obama delivered a nationally televised speech on gun violence in the school's gymnasium.
Hyde Park Academy is an International Baccalaureate World School, one of the earliest Chicago public high schools to adopt the IB program, which it formally took on in 2012. It serves students in grades 9 through 12 as a neighborhood open-enrollment high school.
Hyde Park's Thunderbirds compete in the Chicago Public League and the IHSA. The school carries a deep basketball tradition, and its boys track and field program placed first in the state in 1903 and 1929.
