Living near Marshall Metro HS
The blocks around Marshall sit in the heart of Chicago's historic West Side, spanning East and West Garfield Park, and they carry a deep architectural character that draws people who love vintage Chicago. This is greystone country. You will find rows of classic limestone-fronted greystones, brick two-flats, and ornate vintage apartment buildings, many with the kind of stonework and craftsmanship that is hard to find in newer construction. It is one of the neighborhoods along the city's Greystone Belt, a few miles straight west of the Loop, and preservation-minded buyers have been quietly restoring these homes for years.
The anchor of the area is Garfield Park itself, a 184-acre green space designed by William Le Baron Jenney, and its crown jewel, the Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the largest conservatories in the country. Having that much glasshouse garden and open parkland nearby is a genuine amenity, and it gives the neighborhood a calm, leafy counterpoint to the density of the city. Locals treat the Conservatory grounds as their front yard for weekend walks, plant shows, and family time.
Getting downtown is straightforward. The CTA Green Line runs right through the community with stops at Kedzie, California, and the Conservatory-Central Park Drive station, putting the Loop a short ride away, and the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) along the southern edge gives quick car access to the rest of the metro. For buyers who want a real Chicago address, character-rich housing stock, and city-wide transit at the door, this pocket of the West Side offers a lot for the money.

🎬Hoop Dreams
The school featured in the acclaimed 1994 documentary that followed student Arthur Agee.
The school
John Marshall Metropolitan High School opened in 1895 in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on Chicago's West Side and is named for John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Operated by Chicago Public Schools, it serves students from the East Garfield Park, West Garfield Park, North Lawndale, and Humboldt Park neighborhoods. The school gained national attention when it was featured in the acclaimed 1994 documentary Hoop Dreams, which followed Marshall student Arthur Agee.
Marshall is a Chicago Public Schools attendance-area school that pairs core academics with Career and Technical Education pathways, including courses in culinary arts and horticulture. It provides social-emotional learning support and a structured transition program for incoming ninth graders.
Marshall's athletic program is one of the most decorated in Illinois history. Summarizing IHSA records, the school has won multiple state championships, finished in the top four dozens of times, and made a state-record number of appearances in the state final tournament. The boys basketball program is historically significant: the 1958 team was the first from the City of Chicago to win the state championship, and the Commandos captured the IHSA Class 1A title again in 2026. The girls basketball program, long coached by Hall of Famer Dorothy Gaters, has won ten state titles.
