About Carl Schurz High School
Carl Schurz High School opened in 1910 on the Northwest Side and was named for Carl Schurz, the German-American statesman and soldier. Its landmark building is considered the masterpiece of architect Dwight H. Perkins, who designed it during his term as architect for the Chicago Board of Education, blending the Chicago and Prairie schools with warm brick, terra-cotta trim, tall vertical piers, and a steeply pitched tile roof. The building was designated a Chicago Landmark in 1979 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. The site at Addison Street and Milwaukee Avenue was chosen in 1908, and the school was formally dedicated on November 18, 1910.
Schurz is a neighborhood Chicago Public Schools high school serving grades 9 through 12, with a stated mission to build the critical-thinking and self-motivation skills students need to become responsible citizens in a technologically rich society.
Schurz competes as the Bulldogs in the Chicago Public League and is a member of the IHSA. The school's purple-and-gold teams have a long history that includes baseball state championships and several other top-four IHSA state-tournament finishes.
