@welcometo_coLiving near Cary-Grove HS
Cary sits along the Fox River in McHenry County, roughly 38 to 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, with the settled, family-first feel of a suburb that grew up around its railroad depot. The village traces back to the 1850s, when the train station first connected local farmers to Chicago, and that rail line is still the heartbeat of the commute today. Cary's Metra station on the Union Pacific Northwest Line runs daily service straight to the Ogilvie Transportation Center in the Loop, which is a big part of why families who want suburban space without giving up a city commute keep landing here.
The housing character runs from established mid-century neighborhoods near the depot to newer subdivisions spreading west, and it is a community of homeowners. The Fox River setting, mature tree cover, and proximity to neighboring Fox River Grove give the area a green, low-key suburban texture, and much of local life orbits the schools and youth sports.
Getting around is easy by car as well as by rail. U.S. Route 14 (Northwest Highway) runs diagonally through town parallel to the Metra tracks, and Illinois Route 31 forms part of the western edge, putting Crystal Lake, Algonquin, and Barrington shopping and dining within a short drive. For a buyer, Cary offers the trade most people are after: a quieter Fox River town with strong District 155 high schools and a genuine daily ride into the city.

The school
Cary-Grove High School opened in 1961 as part of Community High School District 155, serving the northwest suburbs of Cary and Fox River Grove. When it opened, the school borrowed its original colors and the tune of its school song from Northwestern University; the athletic and band uniforms shifted to navy and white in 1978, and navy blue and white became the official school colors during the 1980s. In 1995 the area drew national attention after the Fox River Grove railroad crossing accident, in which a commuter train struck a school bus. Today Cary-Grove is one of four comprehensive high schools in District 155 and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report among the top high schools nationally.
Cary-Grove offers more than 200 courses, including 20 Advanced Placement classes. The reported graduation rate is 97 percent, and about 92.7 percent of graduates intend to continue their education after high school. The AP participation rate is 22 percent, with 88 percent of AP exams earning a qualifying score of 3 to 5. The school has been ranked in the top eight percent of high schools nationally by U.S. News & World Report.
Cary-Grove competes in the Fox Valley Conference, and the Trojans carry one of the area's strongest football traditions, capped by four Class 6A state championships in 2009, 2018, 2021, and 2023. The football team has also finished state runner-up three times. Beyond football, the girls volleyball program won the school's first state title in 2009 and reached the state finals three consecutive years. Individual Trojans have claimed IHSA track and field titles as well.
