How Plainfield got here

A bit of history.

Plainfield is the oldest community in Will County, with the settlement of Walkers' Grove established on the banks of the DuPage River by 1828. The first European-American settler was James Walker, who arrived in 1826 with his father-in-law, the Methodist minister Jesse Walker, and in 1828 erected a sawmill around which the settlement grew. The village of Plainfield was platted just north of Walkers' Grove in 1834 by Chester Ingersoll, the East Plainfield plat followed in 1836, and the communities joined to form present-day Plainfield by the mid-1840s. The town prospered as a supply and lumber stop on the routes between Fort Dearborn in Chicago and Ottawa, though its early growth slowed when the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848 and bypassed the village.

On August 28, 1990, a violent F5 tornado, the only F5 ever officially recorded in the Chicago area, tore a 16-mile path through Oswego, Plainfield, Crest Hill, and Joliet. It killed 29 people, injured 353, and damaged or destroyed more than 1,100 homes, demolishing Plainfield's only high school and St. Mary Immaculate church and school. No tornado warning was issued until after the storm had passed, a failure that drove national advances in NEXRAD Doppler radar and prompted the National Weather Service to open a dedicated Chicago-area office in nearby Romeoville in 1993. Following the tornado, a population boom took hold at the end of the 20th century, transforming the formerly agricultural town into one of the Chicago region's fastest-growing suburbs.
