The area, not just the school
Prairie Ridge sits on the northern edge of Crystal Lake near Bull Valley, where the subdivisions thin out and the McHenry County conservation land starts to take over. This is the quieter side of Crystal Lake. Sterne's Woods and the Veteran Acres preserve are minutes from the school, and you're a short drive from Prairie Grove village to the east. Families who land here are usually trading the tighter-grid Lake in the Hills side of town for more lot, more trees, and the kind of north-county feel you don't get south of Route 14.
Commute-wise you've got Route 14 a few minutes south for the BNSF Metra at the Crystal Lake station, and the Walkup corridor cuts a clean line down to downtown Crystal Lake, with Main Street shops, the Dole, and Three Oaks Recreation Area for summer. The character is a mix: older established custom homes near the school, newer subdivisions filling in along Pingree Road, and equestrian property out toward Bull Valley. It draws a real cross-section. First-time buyers and families upgrading for the school district both end up looking here.

About Prairie Ridge High School
Prairie Ridge opened in 1997 as Community High School District 155's fourth campus, built to relieve overcrowding at Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, and Cary-Grove. The first graduating class voted on the school's name, colors, and fight song before the doors opened. Silver and Maroon Wolves was the result, and that founding-class identity still shapes how the school presents itself.
Prairie Ridge offers more than 200 courses across AP, Project Lead the Way engineering, and dual-credit programs with McHenry County College and the University of Illinois. The four-year graduation rate sits at 98%, above both the District 155 average (96%) and the state average (88%).
Prairie Ridge competes in the Fox Valley Conference and has built one of the more decorated athletic résumés in the area for a school its size. Football has three Class 6A state championships (2011, then back-to-back in 2016 and 2017, with a 28-game win streak across the title years). The baseball team won the 2007-08 IHSA state championship; the boys' soccer team won the 1999-2000 state title. Boys swimming co-ops with the other three D155 schools.

The questions buyers actually ask
Prairie Ridge HS FAQ
The questions I get most from buyers shopping the Prairie Ridge HS district. If yours isn't here, text 224-385-8779, same-day reply.
- What district is Prairie Ridge High School in?
- Prairie Ridge is one of four high schools in Community High School District 155 (D155), which serves the Crystal Lake area. The other three are Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, and Cary-Grove.
- Which neighborhoods feed into Prairie Ridge?
- Prairie Ridge's attendance area covers Crystal Lake's 60012 zip plus parts of 60014, along with Prairie Grove, Oakwood Hills, Burtons Bridge, Ridgefield, and portions of McHenry, Cary, and Bull Valley. Boundary lines can shift year to year. Always confirm with the district before you make an offer based on schools.
- How big is Prairie Ridge?
- About 1,138 students in 2023-24, making it the smallest of the four D155 high schools. Student-to-teacher ratio runs around 16:1, which is on the smaller end for a public high school in McHenry County.
- How does Prairie Ridge compare academically to the other D155 high schools?
- Prairie Ridge's four-year graduation rate is 98%, above the District 155 average (96%) and well above the Illinois state average (88%). It offers more than 200 courses including AP, Project Lead the Way engineering, and dual-credit programs with McHenry County College and the University of Illinois. All four D155 high schools perform well by state metrics; the differences are more about size, location, and the feel of each campus.
- What sports is Prairie Ridge known for?
- Football is the headline. Prairie Ridge has three IHSA Class 6A state titles (2011, 2016, 2017) with a 28-game win streak across the back-to-back championship years, which is rare for a school its size. Baseball won the 2007-08 state title and boys' soccer won in 1999-2000. The Wolves compete in the Fox Valley Conference.
- What's the commute like from a home in the Prairie Ridge district?
- Most of the district sits within a few minutes of Route 14, which feeds the Crystal Lake BNSF Metra station (about a 90-minute ride to Chicago's Ogilvie). For drivers, Route 14 runs east toward Barrington and the I-90 corridor. Walkup Road and Crystal Lake Road both connect the northern subdivisions down to downtown Crystal Lake.
- What's the housing mix like in the Prairie Ridge attendance area?
- More variety than people expect. You'll find older established custom homes near Bull Valley and Prairie Grove, newer subdivisions filling in along Pingree Road and Walkup, and equestrian or larger-lot property out toward Bull Valley. Price points run from the high $300s for entry-level homes up to $1M+ on the larger custom lots.
- How do I find homes that actually feed Prairie Ridge?
- The listings on this page are filtered to homes whose MRED listing agent assigned Prairie Ridge as the high school. That's the most accurate signal available without district-issued boundary files. School assignment can still change year to year, so always confirm with D155 directly before you write an offer based on schools. If you want me to set you up with alerts for new homes in the district, text 224-385-8779.
- Where do I send my kid to elementary or middle school if we live in the Prairie Ridge district?
- Prairie Ridge is the high school. Elementary and middle schools in the same area are run by Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 and Prairie Grove Consolidated District 46, depending on exactly where you land. If you give me an address I can tell you which K-8 schools serve it.

- Community High School District 155, 1 South Virginia Road, Crystal Lake, IL. Main office line is on d155.org. Their registration office can confirm attendance area for any specific address while you're under contract.
