How Downers Grove got here
Downers Grove was founded in 1832 by Pierce Downer, a farmer who came west from Rutland, New York, and settled in a stand of bur oaks that gave the future village its name. Early settler families (the Blodgetts, Curtisses, Blanchards, Stanleys, Lymans, and Carpenters) built farmsteads across what is now central DuPage County. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad reached Downers Grove in the early 1860s, with regular commuter service to Chicago starting in 1864, which gave the settlement a daily link to the city and set the pattern for the rail-oriented village that exists today. Downers Grove formally incorporated in March 1873.
Through the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the village grew as a quiet rail suburb. In 1928 the Tivoli Theatre opened on Highland Avenue as a French Renaissance-style movie palace, only the second American theater designed and built specifically for talking pictures. Postwar decades brought subdivision growth on former farmland, the construction of I-88 to the north in 1958, the opening of South High in 1964 to relieve crowding at the original Downers Grove High School (now North), and I-355 to the west in 1989, all of which cemented Downers Grove as a full-service Chicago suburb. By the 2020 Census the village counted 50,247 residents.
