@otheplaceswegoLiving near Crystal Lake South HS
The area, not just the school
Living near Crystal Lake South puts you on the south and west side of one of McHenry County's most established lake towns, with a settled, family-first feel. This is the part of Crystal Lake anchored by Three Oaks Recreation Area, a former quarry the city reclaimed and reopened in 2010 as a swim beach with some of the clearest water around, plus boat rentals, trails, and fishing. The Gators give the area its own identity, distinct from Prairie Ridge on the north end and Crystal Lake Central downtown, so families often choose a home with this attendance area in mind.
The housing here runs the gamut, which is part of the appeal. You will find established neighborhoods from the 1970s and 1980s that grew up alongside the school, newer subdivisions from the city's growth in the 1990s and 2000s, and a range of price points that works for first-time buyers, move-up families, and downsizers alike. Lots tend to be generous and streets are mature and tree-lined.
What ties it together is access. Route 14 and Route 31 put shopping, dining, and everyday errands minutes away, and downtown Crystal Lake is a quick trip north. The big draw for commuters is the Metra Union Pacific Northwest line, which runs straight into Chicago, so you can have small-lake-town quiet at home and still keep a downtown job.

About Crystal Lake South High School
Crystal Lake South opened in August 1978 as the city's second high school, built after the original Crystal Lake Community High School, now Crystal Lake Central, split into two schools under the pressure of rapid local growth. South graduated its first class in 1979 and its first full four-year class in 1982. As the city kept growing, the school reached capacity in 2002 and added classrooms through the mid-2000s. The Gator mascot was chosen by a student poll in 1976, and a bronze gator statue was placed at the rebuilt main entrance in 2016.
Crystal Lake South competes in the Fox Valley Conference as the Gators and has built a strong state-tournament tradition. The program has won IHSA state championships in boys golf (1981), baseball (2017), and boys soccer in both 2019 and 2023.

- Which high school will my kids attend on the south or west side of Crystal Lake?
- Homes in this attendance area feed Crystal Lake South High School, the Gators, part of Community High School District 155. - Crystal Lake sits on the Metra Union Pacific Northwest line, so you can park and ride into downtown Chicago, while Routes 14 and 31 handle local trips for shopping and errands.
