Schererville sits at the Crossroads of the Nation, where U.S. 41 and U.S. 30 cross, and that location is a big part of the draw. Families here get Indiana taxes and a genuine suburban feel while keeping downtown Chicago about 35 miles up the road. The housing runs the full range, from established tree-lined streets to newer custom homes in areas like Hartsdale, plus townhomes and condos that keep the town within reach for first-time buyers and downsizers.
Everyday life is easy thanks to the shopping and dining clustered along the highway corridors, and commuters can drive in or pick up the South Shore Line at the nearest station over in Hammond. Add strong, well-regarded schools anchored by Lake Central and a small-town-meets-suburb character, and it is easy to see why Schererville lands on so many best-places-to-live lists for the region.

The school
Lake Central High School opened in 1967 as the single comprehensive high school for the St. John Township Tri-Town area, succeeding the former Dyer Central High School. An attached Freshmen Center wing was added in 1994, and in November 2011 Tri-Town voters passed a building referendum that funded a major renovation and rebuild of the school between 2011 and 2016. Today it remains the only high school in the Lake Central School Corporation, serving St. John, Dyer, and almost all of Schererville.
Lake Central offers a broad Advanced Placement program with AP courses across science, math, social studies, English, music, and art, plus honors, dual-credit, and career-center pathways such as engineering, automotive, and firefighter training. It was ranked 27th among Indiana high schools in the 2025-2026 U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools list.
Lake Central competes in the IHSAA and the Duneland Athletic Conference as the Indians, with a deep tradition of state-level success. The program holds eight IHSAA state championships, led by softball (1992, 2002, and 2004), baseball (2012 and 2024), girls basketball (1994), boys soccer (2010), and boys swimming (1987).

Thinking of selling?
Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
