Living in Munster puts you right on the Illinois line, roughly 30 miles southeast of the Chicago Loop, with the best of both worlds: a settled, tree-lined Northwest Indiana town and quick access to the city. Locals call it the Town on the Ridge after Ridge Road, the ancient Lake Michigan shoreline that runs through the older north end, and daily life centers on places like Centennial Park with its golf course and amphitheater, the Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, and the well-known Three Floyds Brewing.
Getting to work is easier than it has ever been. The Borman Expressway and Calumet Avenue (US 41) are minutes away, and the South Shore Line's new Monon Corridor, part of the West Lake Corridor extension, opened on March 31, 2026 with stations at Munster Ridge and Munster/Dyer and peak trains running straight into Millennium Station in downtown Chicago. Housing runs from mid-century ranches on the ridge to larger newer builds in the northern neighborhoods, and Munster consistently posts some of the highest home values and household incomes in Lake County. It has the feel of a stable, proud, well-kept suburb where people tend to put down roots.

The school
Munster High School grew out of the School Town of Munster, whose roots trace to a one-room schoolhouse built in 1852 on Ridge Road. As the town expanded through the mid-1900s, Munster teenagers had to attend high school in Hammond or Highland, so the school board approved a dedicated high school. Construction began in June 1965 and the building opened to students in September 1966. The campus has been modernized many times since, including a football, track, and soccer complex dedicated in 2010 and a $17 million aquatic center opened in January 2011.
Munster High School is the only high school in the School Town of Munster, and all five schools in the district are recognized as Indiana Blue Ribbon schools with five-star ratings. Munster High School has appeared on national Top Schools lists, and the district runs a one-to-one technology program that provides laptops to students in grades 5 through 12.
The Munster Mustangs compete in the Northwest Crossroads Conference, with longtime rivalries against Highland and Lake Central. The school fields a full slate of IHSAA sports and is home to a rare high-school-connected aquatic center. Its signature IHSAA team achievement is the 2002 Class 4A baseball state championship.

Thinking of selling?
Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
