About the community
Merrillville sits at the literal crossroads of Northwest Indiana, anchored by the intersection of US Route 30 and Interstate 65 about 45 miles southeast of downtown Chicago. The town serves as Lake County's primary retail and entertainment hub, headlined by Southlake Mall, the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana, and the former Star Plaza Theatre district along US 30. Incorporated in 1971 to fend off annexation by neighboring Gary, Merrillville grew rapidly through the late 20th century into one of the largest towns in Indiana by population. Today its roughly 35,800 residents live in a mix of mid-century ranches, 1970s and 1980s subdivisions, and newer infill housing, with Crown Point bordering to the south and Gary to the north. The commercial corridor along Broadway and US 30 makes it a regional shopping and dining destination, while quieter residential streets east of Broadway offer suburban living within an easy reach of both Chicago and the Indiana Dunes.

How Merrillville got here
The land that became Merrillville was originally part of Potawatomi territory and sat astride the Sauk Trail, a major east-west Native American and pioneer route across northern Indiana. The settlement was first known as McGwinn's Village, named for the Potawatomi leader whose band camped at the crossing of the Sauk Trail and a north-south trace near present-day Broadway and 73rd Avenue. European-American settlement began in the 1830s, and by 1848 a man named William Merrill had platted a town site at the crossroads, giving Merrillville its current name. For more than a century the area remained an unincorporated farming community within Ross Township, with grain elevators, a few stores, and scattered homesteads.
The modern town came together in response to a threat. As Gary, Hammond, and other Lake County cities expanded outward in the 1960s, residents of unincorporated Ross Township feared annexation, particularly by Gary to the north. Merrillville incorporated as a town on March 15, 1971, locking in its borders and its tax base. Population growth followed quickly. Southlake Mall opened in 1974 along US 30, becoming Northwest Indiana's largest enclosed shopping center, and the Holiday Star Theatre (later Star Plaza Theatre) opened in 1979 alongside the Radisson Hotel, hosting national touring acts for nearly four decades. Star Plaza was demolished in 2018 after closing the year before. The Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana opened on the former Cinemark site near I-65 and US 30 in May 2021, replacing the riverboat-era Majestic Star casinos that had served Gary's lakefront.

Your local agent
Most agents will list anything. I focus on the communities I actually know, and the details that determine resale value here aren't in the MLS write-up: which lots back to open space, which streets carry the most consistent demand, which floor plans buyers ask for by name, and what each HOA actually covers.
When you're ready to tour or list, you want someone who's walked the streets, talked to the residents, and read the last 50 closed comps in this market specifically. That's how I work. Text or call any time, and I'll give you a real take, not a brochure.
Thinking of selling?
Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
