How Maywood got here

A bit of history.

Maywood was founded on April 6, 1869, and formally organized as a village on October 22, 1881. In 1868, Vermont businessmen established the Maywood Company, which in 1870 platted streets and began construction on the north side of the rail tracks, planting some 20,000 nursery-grown trees to shape the future town. The village was named by Colonel William T. Nichols after his late daughter, May, combined with the groves of trees on the prairie site. Before this development the area saw limited European-American settlement, but at least one local house served as a station on the Underground Railroad, commemorated today by a plaque near Lake Street and the Des Plaines River bridge.

Maywood's 20th-century history is layered with aviation, sport, and sacrifice. Two airports once operated here, including an airfield tied to early airmail flying, and Loyola University Medical Center was later developed on one former airport site. The village became the base for the 33rd Tank Company of the Illinois National Guard, organized in 1929. In 1940, 122 of its men were inducted as Company B of the 192nd Tank Battalion and sent to the Philippines, where many died on the Bataan Death March and only 41 survived to return home, a loss still honored with an annual Bataan Day Parade. Maywood retains many unaltered century-old homes and 17 properties on the National Register of Historic Places.

Your local agent

Joe knows Maywood

Most agents will list anything. I focus on the places I actually know, and the things that move value here don't show up in the MLS write-up: which streets and buildings hold demand, what the HOA or assessments really cover, how the comps read once you account for condition and location, and where buyers consistently want to be.

When you're ready to tour or list, you want someone who has read the last 50 closed comps in this specific market, not a national average, and can tell you what they actually mean for your price. That's how I work. Text or call any time, and I'll give you a real take, not a brochure.
