The area, not just the school
Cedar Lake is one of Northwest Indiana's most charming lake towns, built around the largest natural lake in the region. It drew Chicago vacationers by the trainload a century ago, and weekends here still center on the water. The revitalized lakefront, with its walking paths, pavilion, and beach, gives the town a resort feel while everyday life stays refreshingly affordable and low-tax.
Buyers find everything from cozy cottages and updated ranches to newer subdivisions with more space than you would get closer to the city. The location is hard to beat: you can reach downtown Chicago in under an hour, so families get small-town lake living without giving up big-city access. Schools anchored by Hanover Central round out the appeal for families putting down roots.

About Hanover Central High School
Hanover Central High School traces to the mid-1960s. Construction began about 1965, and the school celebrated its first official graduating class in 1968. It is the lone high school in Hanover Community School Corporation, a district whose roots reach back to the one-room schoolhouses of Hanover Township. Today the school anchors a growing Cedar Lake community and also serves families across parts of St. John, Crown Point, and Dyer.
Hanover Central serves roughly 817 students in grades 9 through 12 with a college-and-career focused curriculum, and the district emphasizes pathways to higher education, the military, or the workforce. The school is recognized in the U.S. News and World Report Best High Schools rankings.
The Wildcats compete in the Greater South Shore Athletic Conference and field a full slate of IHSAA sports. Softball is the program's signature success, with state championships in 2004 (Class 2A) and again in 2026 (Class 3A), when Hanover Central beat New Palestine 6-4 for the title.
