Berwyn is one of Chicago's most characterful inner-ring suburbs, a Cook County city built almost entirely on a tight, walkable street grid just west of the city line. It is best known for having one of the largest concentrations of classic Chicago-style brick bungalows in the country, most built in the 1920s and 1930s, and the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Getting downtown is genuinely easy here. Berwyn sits on Metra's BNSF Line, one of the busiest commuter routes in the region, with three stops inside the city carrying riders straight into Union Station. Drivers have quick access to the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) just to the north and Midway Airport a short hop to the south. The Depot District and the shops and restaurants along Roosevelt Road and Cermak Road give the area a lived-in, neighborhood feel.
For families, Morton West High School anchors the south side of town at 2400 Home Avenue. The combination of vintage housing stock, true walkability, multiple train stops, and proximity to Chicago is exactly what draws first-time buyers and longtime owners alike to put down roots in Berwyn.

📚AP and PLTW
Morton West offers Advanced Placement courses and a Project Lead The Way curriculum.
📅Opened in 1958
The school opened in 1958 and has grown through several additions since.
The school
District 201 spent decades trying to open a second high school to relieve overcrowding at the original Morton, floating bond proposals as early as the 1920s and 1930s before voters approved a 5.9 million dollar bond issue in 1953 for a new school in Berwyn. J. Sterling Morton West High School opened in 1958, with Ridgeland Avenue set as the attendance boundary that sent roughly 45 percent of Morton students to the new building and ended three decades of split-shift scheduling. The campus grew over the years, adding halls in 1966, additions in the late 1990s, and a freshman wing in the late 2010s.
Morton West is a comprehensive public high school serving grades 9 through 12 that offers Advanced Placement courses and a Project Lead The Way curriculum. As of the 2024-25 NCES data, the school enrolled 3,374 students with roughly 218 teachers and a student-teacher ratio near 15 to 1. Third-party data report an AP participation rate around 41 percent.
Morton West competes in the IHSA as part of a unified Berwyn-Cicero (Morton) program shared with Morton East, fielding teams as the Mustangs in maroon. Recent district reporting notes West Suburban Conference championships in boys soccer and boys cross country, and the boys cross country program has qualified for the IHSA state finals.
