@bareragsLiving near Barrington HS
Living in the Barrington area means settling into one of the most established and affluent corners of the northwest suburbs, roughly 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. The greater Barrington area pulls together the village of Barrington with its sister communities, Barrington Hills, North Barrington, South Barrington, Lake Barrington, Tower Lakes, and Deer Park, each with its own feel but a shared reputation for space, privacy, and top-tier schools. Barrington Hills is the heart of the area's famous equestrian character, where a minimum 5-acre zoning restriction on new construction has been in place since 1963 and horse farms predate the village itself.
The village of Barrington itself gives the area a true town center. Its historic downtown grew up around the railroad, and after a series of late-1800s fires, frame buildings were rebuilt in brick and stone, many of which still stand today. The Union Pacific Northwest Line runs right through town with Metra commuter service to Chicago, which is a big part of why families who want acreage and quiet still feel connected to the city. Route 14, known as Northwest Highway, and Route 59, Hough Street, are the main arteries that tie the communities together.
The surrounding villages round out the lifestyle. South Barrington is home to The Arboretum of South Barrington, an upscale outdoor lifestyle center, and its homes sit on large lots with some of the highest household incomes in the area. North Barrington offers low-density estate neighborhoods and gated golf communities. Deer Park is the shopping anchor with Deer Park Town Center. Across all of these towns, the strength and reputation of Barrington 220 schools is consistently one of the biggest drivers of home values.

The school
Although the village of Barrington incorporated in 1865, the area did not have a dedicated permanent high school until 1949. On February 8, 1947, residents voted to select the current West Main Street site and authorized the purchase of a 70-acre tract and bonds for construction. Groundbreaking took place in July 1948, and classes began in the new building on September 12, 1949. The school was expanded repeatedly over the following decades, including major additions in 1956, 1960, and a substantial 1999 remodeling, with a new front atrium completed in January 2024.
Barrington High School has a strong academic and fine arts reputation. According to the College Board, it ranks in the top 1% of more than 14,350 high schools nationally and internationally for the number of AP exams taken, and the school reports that ninety-eight percent of its graduates enroll in college or post-graduate programs. Its Fine Arts Department is described as one of the most comprehensive in Illinois, and its vocal ensembles have performed at venues including the White House, the Sydney Opera House, the Kennedy Center, and Carnegie Hall.
Barrington competes in the Mid-Suburban League, which it joined in 1977, and fields IHSA teams across a wide range of sports. Its teams have won IHSA state championships in baseball, boys' golf, girls' gymnastics, boys' soccer, girls' soccer, girls' cross country, and girls' track and field. The school's athletic tradition is anchored by the Broncos nickname, tied to the area's longstanding equestrian character.

Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
