@danirenee17Living near Downers Grove South HS
Living around Downers Grove South puts you in one of DuPage County's most established and walkable western suburbs, a village of roughly 50,000 people set about 20 miles west of the Chicago Loop. The charming downtown along Main Street is the heart of it all, with the classic Tivoli Theatre, local restaurants, and a farmers market, and the BNSF Metra line runs three stations right through town at Belmont, Main Street, and Fairview, putting Union Station roughly 50 minutes away.
Closer to the school, the south and west sides of Downers Grove blend into Woodridge and Darien, where you will find a mix of mid-century ranches and split-levels, newer subdivisions, and plenty of mature trees and quiet residential streets. Getting around is easy: Ogden Avenue carries you east and west, and I-355 and I-88 are minutes away for drivers heading toward Naperville, Oak Brook, or the airports.
Housing here tends to feel like solid, family-oriented value rather than flashy: well-kept single-family homes on real lots, strong schools, and an easy lifestyle that draws buyers who want space and a train ticket to downtown. It is an area people tend to settle into and stay.

The school
Downers Grove South High School opened in 1964, when the growing student body of the original Downers Grove High School was divided between two campuses, with the older building becoming Downers Grove North and the newer building becoming South. The school has been steadily modernized over the decades, including a 49.5 million dollar referendum approved by district voters in 2001. In March 2018 the community approved a Master Facility Plan to fully overhaul both South and North, with construction running from 2019 through the start of the 2021-22 school year.
Downers Grove South offers a broad college-preparatory program with honors and Advanced Placement coursework, including roughly 27 AP courses spanning the sciences, mathematics, English, history, world languages, and the arts. The school participates in the College of DuPage High School Dual Credit Program, letting students earn college credit while still in high school, and reports a four-year graduation rate of about 92 percent.
South competes in the West Suburban Conference as the Mustangs and fields a deep slate of IHSA sports. The Mustangs captured the IHSA Class 8A football state championship in the 2001 season, and the school holds multiple team state titles in girls volleyball, boys volleyball, boys soccer, and softball. Beyond athletics, South is best known statewide for its speech team, which has won 18 IHSA state championships, more than any other school in Illinois.
