@prettybri444Living near Wauconda HS
Life around Wauconda High School centers on Bangs Lake, the resort lake that first put this village on the map when Chicagoans rode the rail line out to its beaches in the early 1900s. Today the lakefront, the Main Street farmers market, and the summertime Wauconda Fest carnival held right by the high school give the area a genuine small-town, water-town feel that is hard to find this close to the city.
Housing runs the full range, from older cottages and homes near the lake and downtown to the larger subdivisions and townhome developments that filled in north of the village center through the 1990s and 2000s. The result is a mix of price points, so first-time buyers and move-up families both find footing here. Commuters lean on U.S. Route 12, Illinois Route 176, and Illinois Route 59, with O'Hare International Airport roughly 30 miles out.
For buyers, the draw is the blend: lake recreation and a tight community calendar on one side, and practical highway access to the broader northwest suburbs and Chicago jobs on the other. The village grew from about 9,400 residents in 2000 to just over 14,000 by 2020, a steady pace that keeps the hometown character intact.

The school
Wauconda High School first opened its doors in September 1915 and has served the village of Wauconda, in Lake County, ever since. It is the lone high school of Wauconda Community Unit School District 118, which educates students from Pre-K through 12th grade across Wauconda and surrounding communities including Island Lake, Lakemoor, and Volo. The campus sits along North Main Street near Bangs Lake, the resort lake that drew Chicago vacationers to the area in the early 1900s.
Wauconda High School serves grades 9 through 12 with a student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 16 to 1. The school offers Advanced Placement coursework, with an AP participation rate reported around 36 percent, and has held a four-year graduation rate in the high 80s to low 90s in recent years. Its art program is designated an Illinois Art Education School of Distinction, and its theatre program has taken productions to the Illinois High School Theatre Festival.
Wauconda competes as the Bulldogs in the Northern Lake County Conference under the IHSA, in purple and gold. The school fields a broad program including football, baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, wrestling, cross country, and track and field.
