The area, not just the school
Wheeling sits about 23 miles northwest of downtown Chicago in Cook County, and it punches well above its size when it comes to lifestyle. The stretch of Milwaukee Avenue known as Restaurant Row has long made Wheeling a dining destination for the whole region, anchoring a community that takes its food, its parks, and its festivals seriously. Add the Wheeling Metra station on the North Central Service line, which runs weekday commuter trains straight into Chicago Union Station, and you get a suburb that feels connected without feeling crowded.
Day to day life here leans heavily on green space. The Wheeling Park District maintains a long list of parks plus a Community Recreation Center, a family aquatic center, and the Chevy Chase golf course, so there is room to breathe in every season. The calendar fills out with community traditions like the Wheeling International Festival at Heritage Park.
For buyers, Wheeling offers a mix of established single-family neighborhoods, townhomes, and condominiums at price points that read approachable for the northwest suburbs. Families are served by Wheeling Community Consolidated School District 21 at the elementary and middle levels and by Township High School District 214 at the high school level, with Wheeling High School as the neighborhood's anchor.

Wheeling High School first opened in 1964, with the class of 1966 becoming its first graduating class. It sits at 900 South Elmhurst Road in Wheeling and is part of Township High School District 214, the state's second largest high school district by enrollment. Beyond Wheeling itself, the school draws students from Prospect Heights, Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, and Mount Prospect.
Wheeling High School offers more than 200 different courses, many at the Advanced Placement or dual-credit level, organized across departments that include AVID, career and technical education, English and fine arts, math and science, world language, and social science. The school reports a graduation rate around 86 percent, and roughly 80 percent of graduates go on to attend a two-year or four-year college.
The Wildcats compete in the Mid-Suburban League and field a full slate of IHSA sports. Wheeling's distance-running program has been its banner sport: the girls cross country team captured four IHSA state championships in the 1980s, and the boys cross country team added a state title in 1998. Off the field, the school is also known for its WildStang robotics team, a multiple-time FIRST championship winner.
