Thornwood High School opened in 1971 in South Holland as the third school of Thornton Township High Schools District 205, built to relieve overcrowding at Thornridge and Thornton Township high schools. It sits in the township seat of South Holland and draws from local feeder schools. Locally the campus is known as The Wood, and its Thunderbirds have become a fixture of south-suburban athletics.
Thornwood is a public, co-educational high school serving grades 9 through 12 within Thornton Township High Schools District 205. For the 2024-25 school year it enrolled about 1,843 students with roughly 143 full-time teachers, a student-to-teacher ratio near 13 to 1.
Thornwood competes as the Thunderbirds in the Southland Athletic Conference and has a strong IHSA state-tournament pedigree. The girls softball program won three Class AA state championships, the baseball team captured a Class AA title in 1991, and the boys track and field program won four straight Class AA state titles in the early 2000s.
