Living around Thornridge means living in Dolton, a village of a little over 21,000 people in Thornton Township, tucked just south of the Chicago city limits and immediately west of Interstate 94. Dolton borders Chicago to the north, Riverdale and Harvey to the west, South Holland to the south, and Calumet City to the east, so you are firmly in the Chicago Southland but only about 20 miles from the Loop. The village runs a real park system, with more than 120 acres of recreational property across 11 parks plus a recreation center, and the Dolton Public Library District has served the community since 1954.

The housing has the settled, mid-century character of a postwar suburb. Dolton grew fast through a building boom after World War II, and much of the village took shape in that era of solid single-family homes on modest lots. It is a community with deep roots and a strong sense of identity.

Getting around leans on the region's transit backbone. Pace runs bus service on multiple routes connecting Dolton across the Southland, and the wider south suburbs are threaded by Metra's Metra Electric District line, which carries commuters into Millennium Station in downtown Chicago on a fully electrified route. For drivers, I-94 sits close to the eastern edge of town for the trip up to the city.
