The area, not just the school
Harvey sits in the heart of Chicago's south suburbs in Cook County, about 20 miles from downtown, and it remains one of the most commute-friendly spots in the region. The Metra Electric District runs right through town with two stops, so getting to Millennium Station in the Loop is a straight, traffic-free ride. Add quick access to I-294 and I-80 nearby, and you can reach the airports, the city, or the Indiana line without much fuss.
Affordability is the headline here. Compared with much of the Chicago metro, Harvey and its neighbors offer some of the most accessible price points you will find, with a housing stock that leans toward classic early-to-mid-century homes, bungalows, and solid brick construction. For first-time buyers and investors alike, the area stretches a budget further than almost anywhere within commuting distance of downtown.
You are also well placed among a cluster of established south-suburban towns like Dolton, Riverdale, Markham, Phoenix, Dixmoor, and South Holland, each just minutes away. It is a part of Cook County with deep community roots and a strong sense of local pride that shows up everywhere from the high school stands to the neighborhood blocks.

About Thornton Township High School
Thornton Township High School is one of the oldest high schools in Chicago's south suburbs, founded in 1899 after voters chose Harvey over Dolton as the site in an 1898 special election. The original building rose at 154th Street and Columbia Avenue, and the campus grew through major additions in 1912, 1927, 1937, and 1948. In 1928, sixteen-year-old Thornton student Betty Robinson won the first Olympic gold medal ever awarded to a woman in the 100 meters, and her gold medal is still housed at the school.
Thornton Township High School is a public, coeducational school serving grades 9 through 12 and accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education. It reports roughly 119 full-time-equivalent teachers and a student-to-teacher ratio of about 14 to 1.
Thornton's Wildcats compete in the Southland Athletic Conference. The school carries one of the storied basketball traditions in Illinois, winning state championships in 1933 and 1966 and finishing as state runner-up five times. The Wildcats also claimed a football state title in 1991 and three wrestling state championships in the 1950s, alongside a long list of honors from the school's celebrated speech, drama, and debate programs.
