Living near Fremd HS

The area, not just the school

Living near Fremd puts you in the heart of the northwest suburbs, where Palatine and Schaumburg blend leafy residential streets with serious convenience. You are minutes from Woodfield Mall, the largest shopping center in Illinois, plus the restaurants and entertainment that have grown up around it near the Golf Road and I-290 interchange. Schaumburg sits about 26 miles northwest of downtown Chicago and roughly 10 miles from O'Hare, so weekend trips into the city and airport runs are both easy.

Commuters love the options here. Downtown Palatine has its own Metra stop on the Union Pacific Northwest Line, with one-seat trains running straight to Ogilvie Transportation Center in the Loop, while Schaumburg families also reach the rails nearby. Housing in the area runs from established mid-century neighborhoods to newer construction, in a predominantly residential community that holds its value. It is a settled, family-friendly stretch of the metro, and Fremd itself serves the part of Palatine southwest of the Union Pacific Northwest tracks.

The school

About William Fremd High School

Fremd opened in 1961 as Palatine High School South and was the second high school built in Palatine after Palatine High School. It was later named for William Fremd, a longtime area school board member who served on local boards for more than 45 consecutive years and who donated the land for the school. The campus began as a freshman and sophomore school, then expanded into a full four-year high school, graduating its first senior class in 1968. Today Fremd is one of the largest high schools in the region and part of Township High School District 211.

Fremd has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report and by Newsweek as one of the nation's outstanding high schools, with a strong Advanced Placement culture: the average AP test taker in the class of 2018 sat for 5.4 exams. The school reported a four-year graduation rate of 97.9 percent in 2018. Academic strength shows up beyond the classroom too, including state championships in Scholastic Bowl, Debate, and Journalism.

Fremd competes in the Mid-Suburban League and is best known for a girls gymnastics program whose twelve IHSA team titles are a state record. The Vikings have also captured state crowns in badminton, boys soccer, boys swimming and diving, boys cross country, and girls basketball, plus a more recent girls flag football championship. The athletic program fields teams across more than a dozen IHSA-sanctioned sports.
