@hotbrewschicagoLiving near Glenbrook North HS
Living around Glenbrook North means settling into Northbrook, a classic North Shore village about 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago in northeastern Cook County. The streets here have the mature trees and settled feel of a town that grew up in the postwar decades, with a mix of mid-century ranches, updated split-levels, and newer custom homes on generous lots. Northbrook Court anchors the shopping scene, the Village Green and downtown along Shermer and Meadow give the town a real center, and the Chicago Botanic Garden and Cook County forest preserves keep green space close at hand.
Commuting is one of Northbrook's quiet advantages. The Metra Milwaukee District North line runs from the Northbrook station straight into Union Station downtown, with frequent weekday trips, so plenty of residents leave the car at home for the city commute. For drivers, the Edens Expressway (Interstate 94) runs along the western edge of the village and connects quickly to the Tri-State Tollway and O'Hare, which makes getting almost anywhere in the region straightforward.
The town feel is family-first and low-key in the best way: strong schools, tidy parks, a steady calendar of village events, and neighbors who tend to stay put for years. Buyers are usually drawn here by the District 225 reputation and the sense that Northbrook offers North Shore quality without quite the price ceiling of the lakefront suburbs. It is the kind of place people move to for the long haul.

The school
Glenbrook North opened its doors in the fall of 1953 as Glenbrook High School, a name blending Northbrook and Glenview, and was renamed Glenbrook North after Glenbrook South opened in Glenview, with the two schools forming Glenbrook High School District 225. The student body has grown roughly fourfold since the founding, with the Sheely Center for the Performing Arts added in 1979, a fieldhouse in 1990, and a major referendum-funded renovation completed in 2009. The school earned a U.S. Office of Education Excellence in Education Award presented by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and a National Blue Ribbon School distinction in 2008. Filmmaker and alumnus John Hughes used the school's exteriors in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and interiors in The Breakfast Club.
Glenbrook North runs a block schedule and offers honors plus Advanced Placement courses across English, history, math, science, art, music, computer science, and world languages, including less commonly taught languages such as Russian, Mandarin Chinese, and Hebrew. In 2021 the school graduated 96 percent of its senior class and 98 percent of graduates enrolled in college, with that class including 14 National Merit Semifinalists and 176 Illinois State Scholars. The school's debate program is among the most decorated in the country, ranked the top debate school of the 20th century by the National Speech and Debate Association.
Glenbrook North competes in the Central Suburban League and the IHSA, with home games played at William Lutz Stadium. In 2005 the Spartans became the first large-enrollment high school in Illinois to have won a state championship in each of football, basketball, and baseball. The boys basketball team's 2005 title run drew national attention when future Duke coach Jon Scheyer scored 21 points in the final 75 seconds of a comeback game. The girls golf team won three consecutive IHSA titles in 2023, 2024, and 2025.
