Fox Lake sits at the southern tip of the Chain O'Lakes, about 50 to 55 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, and life here really does revolve around the water. The village center wraps around the connected shores of Pistakee Lake, Nippersink Lake, and Fox Lake itself, and summer brings boating, swimming, jet skiing, and tubing across one of the busiest recreational lake systems in Illinois. You will find everything from cottage-style lake homes and year-round waterfront properties to more conventional single-family neighborhoods a little further from shore, so there is a range of housing character depending on how close to the water you want to be.
For commuters, the big draw is the Fox Lake Metra station, the terminus of the Milwaukee District North Line, which runs straight into Chicago Union Station, so you can live on the lake and still reach the Loop by rail. Pace also runs local bus service connecting Fox Lake toward Grayslake and Crystal Lake, and the village is anchored by Grand Avenue (Route 59) and U.S. Route 12. It is a community with deep summer-resort roots that has settled into a stable year-round town, and that mix of lake lifestyle plus a real rail link to the city is what makes the area distinctive.

The school
Established in 1930, Grant Community High School is a comprehensive high school in Fox Lake at the corner of Grand Avenue and Route 59. Its District 124 covers roughly 30 square miles of Lake County and serves sections of Fox Lake, Ingleside, Lake Villa, Round Lake, Round Lake Heights, Round Lake Beach, Volo, Lakemoor, and the McHenry County village of Spring Grove. The school draws students from four public elementary districts (Big Hollow, Gavin, Fox Lake, and Lake Villa) along with several private schools, and it has grown substantially through additions and renovations completed in 2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
Grant offers an Advanced Placement program along with academic labs, dual-credit and college and career readiness pathways, and Future Ready programming. Curriculum partners include the Lake County Technology Campus for career and technical training, and the school supports a Seal of Biliteracy track.
Grant fields its athletic teams as the Bulldogs in the Northern Lake County Conference, competing in the Illinois High School Association. The program runs a full slate of boys' and girls' sports, with football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling among the longstanding offerings. Grant wrestling produced its most decorated alumnus in Olympian Daniel Dennis, a two-time Illinois state runner-up for the Bulldogs.
