Building began around the late 1950s and continued in phases for decades, which is why a compact ranch and a large two-story can sit two doors apart on the same block. The streets have curbs, gutters, sidewalks and street lights, the trees are full grown, and Briargate Elementary sits at the neighborhood's edge.

What it’s actually like to live here
Brigadoon is the kind of neighborhood that gets built when a village grows outward from its train station rather than being airlifted in from a master plan. It started going up in the late 1950s and kept filling in for the better part of forty years, which is why a compact ranch and a large two-story can sit two doors apart on the same block of Aberdeen or Glen Garry. The trees are full grown, the streets have curbs, gutters, sidewalks and street lights, and the whole thing is stitched into the rest of Cary. The Scottish street names are the tell that somebody, decades ago, had a theme in mind and stuck with it.
The practical case for living here is walking distance, and it is a real one. Briargate Elementary sits at 100 S. Wulff Street, essentially at the neighborhood's edge. The Cary Park District's Community Center and administrative offices are at 255 Briargate Road. Downtown Cary and the Metra depot at 63 Crystal Street are a short trip up West Main, which means a commuter can plausibly reach the Union Pacific Northwest platform without adding a car to the household. That matters more than it used to. Cary exists because that rail line was laid across William Cary's original acreage in the 1840s, and the village put a new depot on it in 2019 and adopted a downtown strategic plan in 2021. This is a village actively investing in the thing Brigadoon is closest to.
The honest tradeoffs are three. First, the housing stock is old, and old here spans four decades, so due diligence is not optional. Roofs, siding, windows, service panels, sewer lines and HVAC in a home from the 1950s or 1960s are on a different clock than in a home from the 1990s, and two homes on the same street can be twenty years apart in effective age. Second, there is no homeowners association. That is a genuine plus if you resent dues and architectural review boards, and a genuine risk if you want a governing body to keep the boat parked three doors down out of sight. Third, older homes on quarter-acre lots often mean smaller or detached garages, more compartmentalized floor plans and less storage than a buyer coming from newer construction expects. On the tax side, McHenry County property taxes are heavy in the way most collar-county taxes are, and that should be built into your monthly number from the first showing.
