Blue Island is one of Chicago's most characterful south suburbs, and its name is literal: the community sits on the Blue Island ridge, a long glacial rise that early travelers spotted like an island above the surrounding prairie. That geography gives the neighborhoods around Eisenhower gentle elevation and mature, tree-lined streets, while historic downtown Western Avenue anchors daily life with local shops, restaurants, and a genuine main-street feel. To the south, the Cal-Sag Channel threads through the area, a reminder of the town's working, waterway-connected roots.
For commuters, Blue Island is hard to beat for a suburb of its price point. Two Metra lines serve the town, the Rock Island District and the Metra Electric Blue Island branch, giving households a one-seat ride toward downtown Chicago without a car. I-57 sits just to the west for drivers, and the wider south-suburban road grid puts neighboring towns within a few minutes.
Housing character here is classic older-Chicago-suburb: sturdy brick bungalows, two-flats, Cape Cods, and vintage frame homes on walkable blocks, at prices that draw first-time buyers and families who want space and character close to the city. Households in Blue Island and the surrounding communities of Calumet Park, Robbins, Alsip, Merrionette Park, and Posen all feed into Eisenhower.

The school
Dwight D. Eisenhower High School traces its roots to 1897, when it opened as Blue Island Community High School, the first constituent school of what became Community High School District 218, formally established in 1927. The district finished construction of the current building at 127th and Sacramento in 1950, and General Dwight D. Eisenhower, then president of Columbia University, spoke at the school's dedication. The district renamed the school in his honor in 1962.
Eisenhower is a comprehensive four-year public high school serving grades 9-12 within Community High School District 218, offering Advanced Placement coursework and Career and Technical Education programs alongside its core academics. It enrolls about 1,818 students with roughly 136 full-time teachers, for a student-to-teacher ratio near 13 to 1.
The Cardinals compete in the South Suburban Conference as members of the IHSA, fielding teams across football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, cross country, track and field, tennis, swimming, wrestling, bowling, and golf. Eisenhower's athletic history includes IHSA boys state championships in tennis and track and field.
