Life around Alan B. Shepard High School means living in the established southwest Cook County suburbs, where Palos Heights, Crestwood, Worth, Alsip, and the neighboring villages all feed into District 218. Palos Heights is a small city of roughly 12,000 that has the feel of a mature, quiet community with a high share of longtime owners. Crestwood, the busiest nearby market for homes, sits just east along the Cal-Sag Channel and offers a more affordable, practical southwest-suburban housing mix.
The biggest draw of this corner of Cook County is open space. The area sits at the doorstep of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, whose Palos and Sag Valley divisions are among the largest natural areas in the county, with the district managing roughly 70,000 acres of forest, prairie, wetland, and trails. That means weekends of hiking, biking, and paddling minutes from the front door, a rare amenity this close to the city.
For commuters, the southwest suburbs lean on Metra and the regional road network to reach downtown Chicago. The combination of forest-preserve access, value-priced housing in Crestwood, more settled neighborhoods in Palos Heights, and a reasonable path into the city is what defines the appeal of the Shepard area.

The school
Alan B. Shepard High School opened in 1976 as the third high school in Community High School District 218, joining Eisenhower and Richards. The district had begun searching for a third high school site as early as 1966 and asked voters to approve a bond issue in 1972 for a new school in Palos Heights. The school is named for Alan B. Shepard, the first American in space and the fifth person to walk on the Moon.
Shepard offers more than 30 extracurricular clubs ranging from student publications and academic competitions to service and special-interest groups, including chapters of nationally recognized organizations. The school's academic teams, including the Mathletes, Show Choir, and Speech Team, have a long record of competitive success, with multiple individual IHSA state speech champions.
Shepard competes in the South Suburban Conference and fields teams across baseball, basketball, football, soccer, track, volleyball, and more. The school's badminton program is its most successful IHSA team, placing in the top four at the state tournament four times.

Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
