The area, not just the school
The neighborhoods feeding Hinsdale South sit in the southwest corner of DuPage County, spread across Darien and the village of Willowbrook with pieces of Burr Ridge and Westmont. Willowbrook is a compact village of about 9,200 people that grew out of the old Ridgemoor subdivision and was named for a grove of willows along a local creek. It incorporated in 1960 and built out along Route 83 and I-55 through the 1980s. Darien is the larger neighbor at roughly 22,000 residents, a quiet residential city bordered by Downers Grove, Westmont, Woodridge, Lemont, and Willowbrook.
The big draw here is access. Willowbrook sits right at the junction of Route 83 and I-55, the Stevenson Expressway, and Darien reaches three of the southwest suburbs' major thoroughfares: I-55, I-355, and I-294, the Tri-State Tollway. That puts downtown Chicago, Midway International Airport, and the Oak Brook business and shopping corridor all within an easy drive, and Argonne National Laboratory is just minutes away. Route 83 runs a short five miles north to Oak Brook and the I-88 corridor.
The housing character is classic mature-suburb: established single-family subdivisions on tree-lined streets, a mix of mid-century and later-1980s construction tied to the area's growth spurt, and natural breathing room nearby at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve. It is the kind of area buyers choose for room, calm streets, and short commutes in every direction rather than nightlife.

About Hinsdale South High School
Hinsdale South opened in the fall of 1965 after district voters passed a 1962 referendum for a second high school, welcoming an initial class of 418 freshmen and sophomores at the corner of 75th Street and Clarendon Hills Road in Darien. As part of Hinsdale Township High School District 86, it has long shared a district identity, and an athletic rivalry, with Hinsdale Central. The campus expanded over the decades, including a dedicated science wing with eight classrooms, prep rooms, and a greenhouse that opened for the 2003-2004 school year. Hinsdale South is also home to a regional Deaf and Hard of Hearing program serving students across the broader area.
Hinsdale South has a long track record of academic recognition. The school appeared on Newsweek's national 'Top High Schools' list for six consecutive years through 2010, when it ranked among the best in Illinois on the Challenge Index. Since the 2018-2019 school year, the school has issued every student a Chromebook for use in and out of the classroom.
Hinsdale South competes as the Hornets in the West Suburban Conference and is a member of the Illinois High School Association. Football carries two trophy rivalries: the Doings Cup against district rival Hinsdale Central, and the Rebel Cannon against Downers Grove South. The school maintains extensive facilities, including multiple gyms, a pool, a field house, a stadium with a track, and tennis courts. Its state-championship history includes IHSA titles in baseball and badminton.
