Living in Hinsdale means settling into one of Chicagoland's most established and sought-after villages, a leafy DuPage County community about 17 miles west of the Loop where tree-lined streets, generous lots, and a beautifully preserved downtown set the tone. The walkable village center is a National Register Historic District, full of locally owned restaurants, boutiques, and cafes clustered around the Metra station, so a morning coffee and an evening downtown stroll are part of everyday life here. Architecturally, Hinsdale is a collector's town: stately older homes, custom new builds, and everything in between, which keeps the housing market dynamic and the curb appeal high.
Commuters love how easy Chicago is to reach. Metra's BNSF Line stops right in town, with the downtown Hinsdale station roughly 17 miles from Union Station and additional stops at Highlands and West Hinsdale, and the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) along the eastern edge puts O'Hare, Midway, and the wider suburbs within an easy drive. Families are drawn by the parks and green space woven through the village, from Burns Field and Robbins Park to the wooded 52-acre Katherine Legge Memorial Park and the community pool, plus the highly regarded local schools.
Add it all up and Hinsdale delivers a rare blend: small-town charm and historic character, big-city access, and a premium, blue-chip address that has long ranked among the wealthiest and most stable suburbs in Illinois.

The school
Hinsdale Central traces its roots to 1879, when a single high-school classroom was added to the village's South Side elementary school, and the first class of four students graduated in 1883. In 1911 the district reorganized and the school was named Hinsdale Township High School. After a site at 55th and Grant Streets was acquired in the 1930s, Depression and World War II delays pushed construction back, and the current building was dedicated in 1950. When Hinsdale South opened in 1965, the word Central was added to the name. A $140 million referendum approved in 2019 funded major renovations completed in 2021 and 2022, including the Don Watson Aquatic Center and a new Student Commons.
Hinsdale Central is one of two comprehensive high schools in District 86 and was named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2021. More than 99% of students complete high school, and 96% of the class of 2024 were college bound. The school offers a deep slate of Advanced Placement courses across every department: in 2024, 1,043 students sat 2,660 AP examinations, with 91.7% of students earning a 3 or higher on at least one test. The class of 2024 posted an average ACT composite of 27.7, and Hinsdale Central is consistently ranked among the top public high schools in Illinois.
Hinsdale Central competes in the West Suburban Conference and fields 31 athletic teams. Its athletes have captured more than 121 state championships and over 246 state trophies, and in the 2014-2015 school year the Red Devils set an IHSA record with ten state titles in a single year. The program is anchored by powerhouse boys swimming, tennis, and golf, with a fierce football rivalry against Lyons Township.
