The area, not just the school
Mundelein sits in the heart of Lake County, a friendly village that grew up around Diamond Lake, a 153-acre glacial lake on the south side of town that gives the area its boating, fishing, and shoreline-living appeal. You get a real downtown feel along Lake Street, easy access to Lake County forest preserves and trails, and a community that still hosts town events and a farmers market. It is the kind of place where families put down roots for the schools and the lake-town pace, while staying within easy reach of the bigger shopping and dining at nearby Vernon Hills and Libertyville.
Commuting is straightforward. Mundelein has its own Metra station on the North Central Service line, which runs to Chicago Union Station, and state highways including Route 60 and Route 83 keep you connected to the rest of the county and to the I-94 corridor. Housing here runs the full range, from established mid-century neighborhoods and lakeside homes near Diamond Lake to newer subdivisions, which means there is an entry point for first-time buyers and move-up families alike. If you want a Lake County address with a genuine small-town center, a swimmable lake, and a train downtown, Mundelein checks the boxes.

About Mundelein High School
Mundelein High School was contracted in 1960 and opened to students in 1961, serving the Village of Mundelein and parts of neighboring Lake County communities. The campus has grown through expansions in 1973, 1977, 1987, 1997, and 2016, the last adding a dedicated STEM wing. During the 1992-93 school year the school earned a Blue Ribbon School Award of Excellence from the U.S. Department of Education. In 2024 voters approved a facilities improvement referendum to modernize aging infrastructure, ease overcrowding, and upgrade instructional and career-technical spaces.
Mundelein High School offers a broad college-level program, with Advanced Placement courses across most departments and dual-enrollment credit through the College of Lake County. Students can also pursue career and technical pathways through the Lake County Tech Campus and manufacturing co-operative programs.
The Mundelein Mustangs compete in the North Suburban Conference. The boys gymnastics program is the school's signature dynasty, winning six IHSA state team championships between 1989 and 2000. Baseball has been one of Lake County's most successful programs, finishing IHSA Class 4A state runner-up in both 2016 and 2022.
