@mamma.in.the.middleLiving near Elgin HS
Living near Elgin High School puts you on the east side of one of the Fox Valley's most characterful cities. Elgin grew up along the Fox River about 40 miles northwest of Chicago, and the area still wears that history well: downtown has seen a real renaissance, with historic buildings turned into restaurants and clubs, the Grand Victoria riverboat casino on the riverfront, and architecture so notable the city runs a self-guided Open Elgin tour each spring. Lords Park, a 112-acre city park with its own small museum, anchors the east side, and the school's own campus sits beside the green space along Poplar Creek.
Commuting from here is genuinely easy, which is a big part of the appeal for buyers who work toward the city. Elgin has its own Metra station downtown on the Milwaukee District West Line for a one-seat ride into Chicago's Union Station, and Interstate 90 runs right along the city's northern edge for a fast drive to O'Hare and the northwest suburbs. That mix of rail plus expressway is the reason a lot of families settle here instead of pricier towns farther east.
The housing around Elgin High is some of the most varied you will find in the area. You can find grand turn-of-the-century homes in the established east-side and historic-district pockets, mid-century ranches and split-levels closer to the school, and newer construction toward the city's growing edges. Elgin's east side spans the Cook and Kane county line, so buyers get a real range of price points and styles within a short drive of the same downtown, the same river, and the same train.

The school
Elgin High School is one of the oldest public high schools in Illinois, first established in 1869, with its first graduation ceremony held in 1872 and accreditation dating to 1904. The school was originally housed on Gifford Street next to Gifford Park in a building that today serves as the DREAM Academy, and it has changed locations three times across its history. Its current campus sits on the eastern edge of Elgin alongside Poplar Creek. The Maroons nickname comes from the color of the school's early football sweaters rather than any mascot.
Elgin High School is home to one of District U-46's magnet programs, the Gifted and Talented Academy, which lets accepted students take college-level and advanced coursework from freshman through senior year. The school offers International Baccalaureate coursework and, among the five high schools in the district, provides one of the widest ranges of academic opportunities and course choices.
Elgin competes in the Upstate Eight Conference and fields a full slate of programs including football, basketball, wrestling, soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball, track, cross country, bowling, and lacrosse, several with traditions that run back more than 150 years. The school's athletic legacy runs deep: alumnus Douglas Mills played on Elgin teams that captured back-to-back state basketball titles in 1924 and 1925, and the program has sent multiple players to the NBA. More recently the Maroons won an IHSA state Esports title in 2024.
