Living near Von Steuben
Life around Kimball and Foster puts you in the heart of Chicago's North Park, Albany Park, and Mayfair neighborhoods, one of the most diverse corners of the entire country and a place where the streets carry the sounds and flavors of dozens of cultures. The housing here has real character: sturdy brick bungalows, classic Chicago two-flats, and tidy single-family homes on tree-lined blocks, all a short walk from green space along the North Branch of the Chicago River, the trails of LaBagh Woods, and the fields and playground at Eugene Field Park. It is the kind of area where neighbors know each other and a great magnet high school sits right in the middle of it all.
Getting around is easy in every direction. The CTA Brown Line terminates right at Kimball, giving you a straight shot into the Loop, while drivers reach the Kennedy and Edens expressways in minutes for trips to O'Hare or the suburbs. Everyday needs are covered by the shops and restaurants along Lawrence, Kedzie, and Foster, and you are close to North Park University and Ronan Park along the river. For buyers who want city convenience, strong schools, and a genuine neighborhood feel without a downtown price tag, this stretch of the north side is hard to beat.

The school
Von Steuben opened in 1930, first serving the neighborhood as a junior high at Kimball and Carmen avenues in Albany Park, and was designated a senior high school in 1933. It is named for Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, the Prussian-born military officer who trained Continental Army troops during the American Revolution. Today it operates as a Chicago Public Schools magnet high school offering a college-prep program alongside a selective Scholars program of honors and Advanced Placement coursework. It sits on the border of the North Park and Albany Park neighborhoods on Chicago's north side.
Von Steuben is a magnet science center offering Advanced Placement courses and the Project Lead The Way engineering curriculum, plus a selective Scholars program of honors and AP-only classes. The school reports a graduation rate of about 93%, well above the Illinois state average, with roughly 74% of students participating in AP coursework. It holds a 10/10 GreatSchools rating and is ranked among the top public high schools in Illinois by U.S. News and World Report.
Von Steuben competes as the Panthers in the Chicago Public League and fields teams across the fall, winter, and spring seasons, including basketball, water polo, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, cross country, and track and field. The boys' varsity water polo team won Chicago city titles in 2004-05 and 2005-06, and more recent highlights include a 2022 boys' varsity baseball conference championship.
