About East Aurora High School
East Aurora High School traces its roots to private subscription schools taught on the East Side of Aurora starting in 1834, with the first class of four girls graduating in 1867. The original high school stood on Center Street and was torn down in the 1960s. In August 1912 the school opened a larger building on Jackson Street, now K.D. Waldo Middle School, and the present East Aurora High School campus opened in 1957 with major additions in later decades. Through the 1920s the teams had no official nickname and were called the Red and Blacks or East Warriors, but by 1934 the yearbook referred to the football team as the Tomcats, and by 1945 all teams had adopted the name, reportedly in honor of longtime varsity football coach Glen Thompson.
East Aurora offers Honors and Advanced Placement courses across eight departments spanning mathematics, science, English, foreign language, social studies, physical education, business, and fine arts, with roughly 275 semester courses in all. Honors courses emphasize a rigorous pace and depth, and AP courses require independent work and higher-order analysis. The school also runs a Tomcat College and Career Center, open daily during lunch periods and staffed by the student services team.
East Aurora fields more than 20 athletic teams competing in the Upstate Eight Conference and the Illinois High School Association, with offerings from football and basketball to tennis, badminton, baseball, softball, bowling, cross country, volleyball, track and field, and soccer. The East Aurora versus West Aurora football rivalry, first played in 1893, is considered the oldest high school football rivalry in Illinois. The school is also nationally notable for one of the largest Navy JROTC programs in the country.
