@kitschnsinkLiving near McHenry CHS
Living in the McHenry and Wonder Lake area means living on the water. McHenry calls itself the Heart of the Fox River, and the river runs right through the eastern side of town and into the Chain O'Lakes, a connected system of lakes that is one of the most popular recreational waterways in the region. Boating, fishing, kayaking, and lazy summer days on the water are simply part of life here, and Chain O'Lakes State Park anchors thousands of acres of water and shoreline just up the road. Wonder Lake itself is a private, man-made lake created in 1929, and the homes that ring it give the community a relaxed, lake-town feel that you do not find in most Chicago suburbs.
Downtown McHenry brings the charm: three walkable districts along Green Street, Riverside Drive, and Main Street, plus the McHenry Riverwalk, a path that links the river and Boone Creek past shops, restaurants, parks, and a concert venue. Summer fills the calendar with Fiesta Days, the long-running drive-in theater stays open most of the year, and Moraine Hills State Park and the Prairie Trail keep the outdoors close. Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital is right in town, so day-to-day conveniences are covered too.
For commuters, McHenry sits about 46 miles northwest of Chicago and is the end of the line on Metra's Union Pacific Northwest branch, with weekday rush-hour service to Ogilvie Transportation Center downtown. Routes 31 and 120 are the main arteries in and out. Housing runs from established lake homes and subdivisions around Wonder Lake to newer suburban developments, so buyers can find everything from a weekend-feeling waterfront cottage to a brand-new family house.

The school
McHenry Community High School is a four-year public high school in McHenry, part of Community High School District 156, which operates two campuses. The Freshman Campus, formerly the East Campus, opened for the 1923 to 1924 school year and housed grades 9 through 12 from 1924 until 1968. In 1968 the Upper Campus, originally McHenry High School West Campus, opened to upper grades to accommodate population growth, while the East Campus served the younger grades. After Johnsburg High School opened in 1978 and its students departed, both campuses became four-year high schools in 1979, with Illinois Route 31 as the boundary line. Today the district uses a grade-level split, with the Freshman Campus enrolling 9th graders and the Upper Campus enrolling grades 10 through 12.
McHenry offers over 30 Advanced Placement courses and dual-credit pathways. Following a $44 million referendum approved by voters in 2018, the district built a roughly 70,000 square foot Center for Science, Technology, and Industry at the Upper Campus, completed in 2021, the first dedicated facility of its kind among McHenry County high schools. The center supports courses in biology, computer science, manufacturing, robotics, applied engineering, e-Sports, medical studies, and journalism.
McHenry competes as the Warriors in the Fox Valley Conference, with school colors of orange and black and a mascot of Leonidas the Warrior. The Warriors field a broad program including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, cross country, wrestling, water polo, softball, volleyball, tennis, golf, and track and field. Recent highlights include the baseball team reaching the IHSA Class 4A state finals, finishing fourth in 2022 and state runner-up in 2025.

Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
