Living near Proviso West HS

The area, not just the school

The area around Proviso West sits in Chicago's near-western suburbs, where Westchester and Hillside offer the kind of solid, established neighborhoods that drew families here generations ago. Westchester traces its roots to a 1920s plan for an English-style garden community, and you can still feel that intention in its curving, tree-lined streets and well-kept single-family homes. Hillside grew up around the railroad and is known today for landmarks along Roosevelt Road and its easy expressway access.

Commuting is one of the area's biggest selling points. Interstate 290, the Eisenhower Expressway, runs along the northern edge of the area and puts downtown Chicago roughly ten miles to the east, and the nearby Hillside interchange ties together I-290 and I-88 for trips out to the western suburbs. For train commuters, Metra service is close at hand on the Union Pacific West Line at stations in neighboring Bellwood and Berkeley.

Housing here leans toward mid-century single-family homes on real lots, brick bungalows and Cape Cods, plus pockets of townhomes and condos, generally at price points that feel approachable compared with communities closer to the lake. It is a practical, well-located spot for buyers who want space, character, and a genuinely short trip to the city.

The school

About Proviso West High School

Proviso West opened in 1958 after postwar growth pushed enrollment at the original Proviso High School past 3,400 students, prompting the district to buy a 60-acre site in Hillside and pass a bond issue in 1955. When Proviso West opened, the older campus was renamed Proviso East. Today it is one of three schools in Proviso Township High Schools District 209, alongside Proviso East and the Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy.

Proviso West serves grades 9 through 12 with about 1,870 students and a student-to-teacher ratio near 17 to 1. The school offers Advanced Placement and dual-credit coursework. Families researching current AP participation and the latest graduation rate can consult the school's Illinois Report Card page, which is updated each year.

Proviso West competes as the Panthers in the West Suburban Conference and is best known nationally for the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, a boys basketball event it has hosted every December since 1961 as the first holiday basketball tournament in the Chicago area. The school also carries a deep IHSA tradition in baseball, boys track and field, boys cross country, and competitive chess.
