Living near Vernon Hills HS
The area, not just the school
Living around Vernon Hills means you are in one of Lake County's most convenient suburbs. Daily life orbits Westfield Hawthorn, the long-running enclosed mall at Route 60 and Route 21, and the newer Mellody Farm, an open-air shopping and dining center built on a former soybean field. Between the two you have just about every store, restaurant, and errand covered within a few minutes of home, which is a big part of why families settle here and stay.
Getting around is easy. Illinois Route 60 is the main east-west corridor and connects straight to I-94 for the run into the city or up toward Wisconsin. Commuters also have a Metra station right in town on the North Central Service line, about 36 miles from Chicago Union Station, so you can leave the car at home on workdays. Housing runs from established single-family subdivisions to townhomes and newer construction near the shopping districts, so there is a fit for first-time buyers, growing families, and downsizers alike.

About Vernon Hills High School
Vernon Hills High School opened after voters passed a 48.5 million dollar bond referendum in 1997 to build a second high school for Community High School District 128, joining the older Libertyville High School. The doors opened on September 7, 1999 for all District 128 freshmen, and after another year of construction the school opened for all grades in August 2000. The building was formally dedicated on April 9, 2000, the Cougar mascot was selected that spring by a poll of the freshman and sophomore classes, and the first class graduated in 2002. The school has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon school of excellence.
Vernon Hills posted a mean composite ACT score of 29 in 2022 and reports a graduation rate of about 96 percent, well above the Illinois state average. It offers Advanced Placement coursework with an AP participation rate near 72 percent and has earned national recognition, including a U.S. News Silver Medal of Excellence.
Vernon Hills fields a broad slate of varsity sports and competes in the Central Suburban League, with on-site aquatics plus turf baseball and football fields. The boys bowling team placed third at state in 2006 and second at state in 2011 and 2012, and the dance team won four straight TEAMDance Illinois state championships from 2008 through 2011.
