The area, not just the school
Life around East Leyden puts you right at the front door of everything that makes near-northwest Cook County so convenient. The school sits in Franklin Park, with the Leyden Township communities of Schiller Park, Northlake, River Grove, and Melrose Park all close by, and O'Hare International Airport just minutes away across I-294. That airport proximity is a genuine lifestyle perk for frequent flyers and a steady source of local jobs, and the same highway network of I-294, I-290, and the nearby I-90 means you can point the car in almost any direction and be moving quickly.
Commuters love how many ways there are to reach the Loop. Schiller Park and Franklin Park both sit on Metra lines, with the Milwaukee District West Line and the North Central Service carrying riders straight into Union Station, so plenty of residents leave the car at home for the workday. For those who prefer to drive, downtown is reachable in well under an hour on a good morning, and Pace bus routes fill in the gaps.
The housing here has real character and real value. You will find solid mid-century brick bungalows and Cape Cods, classic post-war ranches and two-flats, on tree-lined streets that were built up as the railroad and industry brought families to the area generations ago. Prices remain approachable for this close to the city, and the towns are dotted with neighborhood parks, forest preserves like Schiller Woods, summer pools, and local restaurants. It is the kind of place where you get genuine suburban breathing room without giving up quick access to the airport, the expressways, and the city itself.

🌳Parks and preserves
Schiller Woods, neighborhood parks, and summer pools give the area genuine green space close to the city.
🏠Approachable prices
Brick bungalows, ranches, and Capes keep home prices reasonable for being this close to O'Hare and downtown Chicago.
The school
About East Leyden High School
East Leyden High School traces its roots to 1911, when it opened as a one-year school in Franklin Park. It grew into a three-year program two years later and became a full four-year high school in 1924, the same year Cook County District 212 was formed. As the surrounding suburbs boomed after World War II, the campus was expanded and a second school, West Leyden, was built in nearby Northlake and completed by the late 1950s. Facing declining enrollment in the early 1980s, the two schools merged their athletic and extracurricular programs beginning in the 1981-82 school year, and they have competed together as Leyden ever since.
Leyden District 212 was an early national leader in classroom technology, moving to a fully 1:1 learning environment in the 2012-2013 school year with a district-issued Chromebook for nearly every student. That initiative is supported by Leyden's nationally recognized student-run Tech Support Internship, in which students maintain roughly 3,600 district Chromebooks and have closed tens of thousands of help tickets, earning recognition at CompTIA's national education conference. Academically, East Leyden offers Advanced Placement coursework alongside Career Pathways that let students earn early college credit and industry certifications.
The Leyden Eagles compete in the West Suburban Conference and field the combined teams of East and West Leyden, a partnership in place since 1981. The program's banner moments came in the 1970s and earlier: a state football championship in 1977-78 and state wrestling championships in 1959-60 and 1977-78. Leyden's wrestling tradition runs especially deep, anchored by Hall of Fame coach Charles Farina, whose 592 career wins and nine undefeated seasons stand as Illinois records for a single high school.
