Living near West Leyden HS

The area, not just the school

Living in Northlake puts you in the heart of Cook County's friendly near-west suburbs, where the streets are lined with sturdy brick bungalows, ranch homes, and Cape Cods shaded by mature oak and elm. You are roughly fifteen minutes from O'Hare without sitting under the flight path, and Metra service through neighboring Franklin Park and River Grove makes the trip downtown easy.

Nearby Melrose Park and Franklin Park round out a tight-knit, affordable pocket of the metro that has drawn working families since the postwar boom. It is the kind of community where solid value and a genuine sense of neighborhood still come standard, with neighborhood parks, local restaurants, and quick access to I-294 and I-290 for drivers.

About West Leyden High School

West Leyden High School opened in Northlake in 1959, built to relieve overcrowding as the postwar suburbs west of Chicago boomed, and it graduated its first class in 1963. It is one of the two campuses of Leyden Community High School District 212, a district organized back in 1924 that today serves Franklin Park, Northlake, Schiller Park, River Grove, Melrose Park, Rosemont, and unincorporated Leyden Township. Known as the Knights until 1981, West Leyden merged its athletic program with sister school East Leyden that year, adopting the Eagles nickname while keeping West Leyden's blue and gold colors for the combined program.

Leyden District 212 was an early national leader in one-to-one learning, issuing a Google Chromebook to nearly every student starting in the 2012-2013 school year and becoming a widely cited model for Chromebooks in education. West Leyden students can earn college credit through the district's dual-credit program, and about 43 percent of students take Advanced Placement coursework, with a graduation rate near 80 percent.

West Leyden competes in the West Suburban Conference and, since 1981, fields combined teams with sister school East Leyden under the Eagles banner. The school was known as the Knights before the merger. Its deepest individual tradition traces to a strong wrestling program, including an IHSA top-four finish for the 1968-69 team.
