Lockport is one of those Will County towns where the history is right there on the surface. The city was founded in 1837 as the headquarters of the Illinois and Michigan Canal, and that heritage still anchors downtown today. You can walk the I&M Canal trail, tour the 1838 Gaylord Building, and browse the limestone storefronts along State Street, all part of the Illinois and Michigan Canal National Heritage Corridor, the first such corridor designated in the country.
For buyers, the appeal is the mix. Historic Old Lockport offers character homes near the canal and a genuine walkable downtown with restaurants and shops, while newer subdivisions spread out toward Homer Glen and the western edge of town with the space and newer construction that growing families look for. Lots here tend to feel a little more generous than what you find closer to the city, and the pace is calmer.
The commute works too. Lockport has its own stop on Metra's Heritage Corridor line, which runs weekday rush-hour trains between Joliet and Chicago Union Station, and I-355 and I-80 are both close for drivers heading into the suburbs or the Loop. You get small-town texture and big-city access in the same address, which is a big part of why people put down roots here.

The school
Construction of a dedicated high school at 1222 S. Jefferson Street began in 1909, and in 1910 Lockport High School opened and earned accreditation from the North Central Association. As the area grew, the district added campuses: a West campus opened in Romeoville in 1963, and in 1964 the East Campus opened at 1333 E. 7th Street. In 1971 the district split, with Central and East Campuses remaining in District 205 while the West Campus became Romeoville High School. A late-1990s referendum reshaped both buildings into the layout used today, with East Campus housing sophomores through seniors and Central Campus serving as the Freshman Center.
The Porters compete in the Southwest Suburban Conference with a deep championship history. Football has won IHSA state titles in 2002, 2003, and 2021, and the boys basketball team captured a state championship in 1978. The program also fields strong baseball, softball, wrestling, bowling, and cross country teams.

Not a Zestimate. A real CMA from someone who's sold this neighborhood, knows the floor plan premiums, and can tell you which upgrades the buyer pool here actually pays for.
