About Thornton Fractional South High School
Thornton Fractional South opened in 1958 to serve the growing south-suburban communities of Lansing and Lynwood, and when it opened the older Thornton Fractional High School in Calumet City, dating to 1926, was renamed Thornton Fractional North. For decades the school was known as the Rebels. That nickname was dissolved by the District 215 board in 2020, and the Red Wolves were adopted in 2022.
TF South is a public high school serving grades 9 through 12 within Thornton Fractional Township High School District 215, with a 2024-25 enrollment of about 1,803 and a student-to-teacher ratio near 17 to 1. The Center for Academics and Technology, built between the North and South campuses, extends offerings for both schools and has housed programs including Advanced Placement coursework, computer-aided design, nursing, and culinary arts.
TF South competes as the Red Wolves in the South Suburban Conference and is a member of the Illinois High School Association. The school has won IHSA state championships in girls badminton and girls bowling.
