Life in the area around Glenbard West centers on Glen Ellyn, a village about 24 miles due west of downtown Chicago in DuPage County. The school sits atop Honeysuckle Hill overlooking Lake Ellyn, and the surrounding streets are some of the most picturesque in the western suburbs: mature trees, sidewalks, and a mix of vintage homes that give the neighborhoods a settled, established feel.
Downtown Glen Ellyn is a genuine walkable village center, with locally owned shops, restaurants, and the Glen Ellyn Metra station right on Crescent Boulevard. The Union Pacific West Line carries commuters into Ogilvie Transportation Center in roughly 35 to 40 minutes, which is a big part of the area's appeal for families who want a classic suburb without giving up an easy trip into the city.
The housing character leans older and established rather than new construction: solid early and mid-20th-century homes, plenty of character, and lots that have been part of the village for generations. Add the College of DuPage, the Illinois Prairie Path, Lake Ellyn Park, and a school district with a strong academic and athletic reputation, and you have one of DuPage County's most enduringly popular places to put down roots.

The school
Glenbard West opened in 1923 atop Honeysuckle Hill, overlooking Lake Ellyn, as the first high school in what became Glenbard Township High School District 87. The district name Glenbard was coined that year by blending Glen Ellyn and Lombard. Built of dark red brick in a castle-like Tudor-Gothic style with a turret and tower, it was designed by Coolidge and Hodgdon, the firm behind several landmark Chicago buildings.
Glenbard West has been recognized repeatedly as one of Illinois's top public high schools, appearing among the highest-ranked in the state in U.S. News & World Report and among the top public high schools nationally on Newsweek's Challenge Index. Students choose from a broad slate of honors and Advanced Placement courses alongside dozens of academic clubs, including a state-championship speech team and a nationally competitive Model United Nations program.
Athletics are a point of deep pride at Glenbard West, none more so than football, played at Bill Duchon Field beside Lake Ellyn, a stadium USA Today once named one of the top 10 places in America to watch high school football. The Hilltoppers have won multiple state football championships, and the school also fields perennially strong boys volleyball, gymnastics, and basketball teams in the West Suburban Conference.
